You know, this is that rare occasion where I might have forgiven Gorrell for using photoshop, because who would care if he drew the proper line himself? Instead he drew a chart that bears no relation to the actual rise of the debt. What the hell’s with that up-and-down jagged line? When have we seen the debt go down?
EDIT: I’m not the type to jump on meme bandwagons (and I know I’m horribly late on this one), but…

America’s military spending is bombing us with debt and sinking the economy. A good cartoon.

OH NOES! A loving couple holding hands! An adult free to ingest a substance of their choosing! Contraceptives that will prevent unwanted pregnancies being provided to students!
Yes, Chuck Asay thinks these are all bad things.
(Oh, and has there ever been two people walking and talking about the debt as an ordinary conversation topic?)

Speaking of the Gorrell Question, here’s the trope namer himself saying nothing about anything relevant to today’s headlines.

I think there’s another version of this one with “*vacation repeat” on it.
Gorrell, as far as I know, is not a staff cartoonist.
So are there papers out there that would print a rerun of an editorial cartoon, when they have a pile of other syndicated cartoonists to pick from?

I saw another Gorrell cartoon pop up in my RSS feed today, and it said ‘Vacation rerun’ on it.
This raises the question you just asked: if a paper’s main cartoonist (staff member or not) is on vacation, why not get the work of another cartoonist for the interim? Editorial cartoons should, in theory, touch upon current events, and it’s bad enough cartoonists like to go with untimely toons that do nothing but restate their preexisting biases (it’s why I came up with the Gorrell Question in the first place), but for a newspaper to do so?
They really don’t care, do they? I guess it’s symptomatic of how they don’t care about cartoons at all. Note how many newspapers stuff their comics page with franchise zombies that, more often than note, might as well be reruns.
