Apparently Sean Delonas is now on Cagle.com.

1) What does this say about Daryl Cagle that he’ll support someone the NY Post washed their hands of?

2) I guess I’ll be including his work here now, assuming I don’t end this blog once Google Reader goes bye-bye.

(I’m half-serious there. While I get a number of shitty cartoons from Gocomics.com’s daily emails, I’ve gotten a lot more from the Cagle.com and AAEC RSS feeds. If anyone can recommend a good, free RSS reader besides Google Reader, I’m all ears. If not, I might just be cutting back on this blog.)

Oh boy, another “Facebook proves people don’t want privacy” bullshit argument.

Do people not understand what ‘privacy’ is? It’s an individual’s right to withhold information of their choosing from others. Just because people are tweeting about their lunch or telling anecdotes on Facebook doesn’t mean they’re giving up their right to privacy. It doesn’t mean they are suddenly sharing every last detail of their life.

How many people on Facebook are recounting every masturbation session, every time they drunk dial an ex, every sexist or mildly racist thought they have, or their entire browser history?

No matter how open an individual seems, it is a guarantee that there is something they are keeping from the public at large. Something they only share with their closest confidants, if at all.

And it is their choice what to share and what to keep private. It is only their choice. Regardless of how open they decide to be they never cede privacy completely.

Not the best analogy: saying “People are on Facebook, therefore they don’t care about privacy at all” is like saying “Her clothes are too revealing, therefore she doesn’t care if she gets molested.”

So here’s the question: Is this cartoon horrible because

a) Stahler is dredging up the “Woman unhappy with her body” idea, which is simultaneously one of the oldest, lamest cliches in comedy AND an actual problem that actual women have to deal with every day.

b) Stahler couldn’t be bothered to draw the woman looking anything approaching properly obese, which means that she doesn’t need to go on a diet so much as she needs psychiatric help for her unwarranted body image issues. (And maybe a good first step would be dropping the 150 pounds that is her boyfriend/husband, who seems eager to encourage her inevitable eating disorder.)

c) It’s yet another example of Stahler being just a shitty, shitty hack with no respect for his own work.

No, he didn’t. At least, not a complete fabrication that could not come true. Orwell wrote about his times, but from a skewed angle. 1984 and Animal Farm were fiction in that animals cannot talk and Ingsoc never held power in Britain, but Orwell’s writing was a lens held up to the world as he saw it.

He wasn’t writing fiction. He was warning us. Danzinger presents him here almost as if he’s saying “What are the odds my dystopian future where privacy is but a memory would ever mirror reality? Crazy, huh?”

The dialogue should read “Don’t say you weren’t warned.”

PRISM and the NSA have stabbed Liberty in the back, but she was unaware until Snowden told her.

Our government shouldn’t be doing what it’s doing.

We knew they were doing this crazy shit during the last administration and it’s only gotten larger as the years have gone on.

However, Snowden is NOT a hero and I refuse to believe he did something courageous.

He SHOULD have released that information to an American news source or paper - not the FUCKING BRITISH GUARDIAN ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! That was skeevy.

He also should NOT have come out like he did. It smacks of attention whoredom. He didn’t consult his family, he didn’t tell his girlfriend - he decided something, left, and then revealed himself in his own good time. And I REFUSE to believe he did it for the good of the nation, like some charity. How long before we found out who Deepthroat was? How long before we found out who leaked that 47 percent tape? How many leaks have we had where the person doesn’t come out until LATER.

Now we can’t focus on the issue at hand. Now people will never get outraged enough to change anything.

I honestly don’t know if this kid is joking or what, what with the all caps bits and the insults. (Jerkules? Really?) For the record, the PRISM story was broken by the Guardian AND the Washington Post, which, yes, is an American paper. And I really don’t understand why going to the Guardian, which employs noted civil liberties absolutist Glenn Greenwald (who is, oh look, an American), is “skeevy.”

And no, Snowden is not an “attention whore” for coming forward. Knowing what’s happened to Bradley Manning and other whistleblowers, it was courageous to come forward. And more than a little bit cautious. If he had been arrested or “disappeared” after the PRISM story broke and no one knew who he was… Well, we still wouldn’t know who he was or what was happening to him.

I neither know nor care if Snowden has come across as full of himself, though the fact that he’s risking indefinite detention and worse makes me assume he isn’t.

Because cartoonishly stereotypical terrorists didn’t already suspect their emails and phone records were being monitored.

Ruben Bolling did a cartoon about this idea years ago, but I’m too lazy to go find it. The basic idea - that would-be terrorists were flippantly talking about their plans in chatrooms and emails with handles like “AlQaida4eva” until they found out about PRISM - is so patronizing I have to question if Fitzsimmons is truly stupid enough to believe what he’s presenting or he thinks everyone else is dumb enough to believe this.

Q: Is Bill Day still at it? Is he still churning out the same bland, say-nothing cartoons that repeat an idea he’s already run into the ground?

A: Of course he is. The gun labeled ‘NRA,’ the smoke in the form of the continental United States, California as the… is that supposed to be a handle or something? Why is that there?

For that matter, why is the gun labeled ‘NRA?’ There’s more to America’s gun problem than just the National Rifle Association, William.

Honestly, this is what gets under my skin. Gun deaths and mass shootings are so commonplace we’ve grown used to them. We can chart the stages of national grief, mourning, and acceptance as soon as we hear about a shooting. Yet Bill act like it’s Groundhog Day, as if every shooting is some fresh new incident to us and he thinks he can release the same cartoon he’s done before and we won’t notice, or we won’t ask why he doesn’t say anything else.

“America has a gun violence problem,” he says to us. NO SHIT, SHERLOCK! Got anything else to add or do you just want to repeat this one line every eight weeks like an RPG NPC that can only say the same fucking thing over and over?
