Why is Uncle Sam labeled ‘Personal Freedom,’ you might ask. Well, given what we know about Gorrell, it’s most likely that this picture of Uncle Sam holding a newspaper comes from an earlier cartoon. But simply having Uncle Sam saying ‘Gulp’ would imply that his reaction - America’s reaction - to the proposed large soda ban is fear, rather than the more expected anger, so Gorrell scrawled ‘Personal Freedom’ to make this a ‘new’ character.
Why not just draw a new person and label them ‘Personal Freedom’? Well, it was almost Gorrell’s naptime, and then after that he’d have to make a run for Denny’s for the early bird special, and by the time he got home from that Matlock would be on, then time for bed.
